A major 10-year study by researchers from Tohoku University, Japan, led by neuroscience expert Professor Ryuta Kawashima, tracked over 70,000 schoolchildren and found a strong link between excessive smartphone use and delayed brain development.
Their findings revealed:
Children who used smartphones over 3 hours a day performed worse in school, even if they studied longer than their peers.
MRI scans showed reduced brain development in key areas related to learning, memory, and language.
Prolonged screen exposure was linked to lower verbal intelligence and potential long-term cognitive impacts.
These results mirror another study published in JAMA Pediatrics, which found that just 1 hour of screen time at age 1 could be associated with developmental delays by age 2 and 4.
