At Scholar’s Oasis, we believe that a child’s brain is their most valuable asset — and protecting it starts with awareness.

Screen Time & Brain Development: What Every Parent Should Know

A major 10-year study by researchers from Tohoku University, Japan, led by neuroscience expert Professor Ryuta Kawashima, tracked over 70,000 schoolchildren and found a strong link between excessive smartphone use and delayed brain development.

Their findings revealed:

  • Children who used smartphones over 3 hours a day performed worse in school, even if they studied longer than their peers.

  • MRI scans showed reduced brain development in key areas related to learning, memory, and language.

  • Prolonged screen exposure was linked to lower verbal intelligence and potential long-term cognitive impacts.

These results mirror another study published in JAMA Pediatrics, which found that just 1 hour of screen time at age 1 could be associated with developmental delays by age 2 and 4.

As educators and parents, we need to stay informed. Limiting screen time, encouraging real-life interaction, reading, and outdoor activities are more than lifestyle choices — they’re brain boosters.

Let’s work together to build not just academic excellence, but also healthy minds.
